été 2010 : En route pour Xin Du Qiao

The last bus for our next stage already left.

We look for a car. The driver inclined to take us wishes to find the other persons to optimize his journey. We thus have to wait.

He calls us finally, he found 4 other persons for the journey.

One of them is pregnant and sick and thus has to travel lengthened on the seat of the middle, the head put on her husband’s knees and the feet on a friend. She has a drip and moves with difficulty.

 

Le dernier bus pour notre prochaine étape est déjà parti.

Nous cherchons une voiture. Le chauffeur disposé à nous emmener souhaite trouver d’autres personnes pour optimiser son voyage. Nous donc devons attendre.

Il nous appelle enfin, il a trouvé 4 autres personnes pour le voyage.

Une des quatre est enceinte et malade et doit donc voyager allongée sur le siège du milieu, la tête posée sur les genoux de son mari et les pieds sur une amie. Elle a une perfusion et se meut difficilement.

Ozlem and I we have to be on the back seat of van and we are obliged to rise by behind the car by climbing over the luggage because of the lengthened lady who prevents us from passing by the door!

Ozlem et moi nous retrouvons sur le siège arrière du van et nous sommes obligées de monter par derrière en escaladant les bagages car la dame allongée nous empêche de passer par la porte !

One of the ladies with magnificent long dark hair attached fashionably local. She is very beautiful!

Une des dames à de superbes longs cheveux noirs attachés à la mode locale. Elle est très belle !

Our last meal with Lou San

Notre dernier repas avec Lou San

Then we find a car and we leave in the direction of Xin Du Qiao

Puis nous trouvons une voiture et nous partons en direction de Xin Du Qiao

Litang : 3 Sky burying

At about 9:40 am another car arrives with the other members of the family. We go away from the fire to leave them between them.

10 minutes after a monk arrive. He has to locate the best place to put the body.

We hear him to sing some prayers

Vers 9 h 40 une autre voiture arrive avec d’autres membres de la famille. Nous nous éloignons du feu pour les laisser entre eux.

10 minutes après un moine arrive. Il doit repérer le meilleur endroit pour poser le corps.

Nous l’entendons chanter quelques prières

What is impressive is to see the vultures very close, what watches, and are ready to throw themselves on the body.

Ce qui est impressionnant est de voir les vautours très proche, qui guettent, et sont prêts à se jeter sur le corps.

The preparations are long.

Les préparatifs sont longs.

A man takes care to cut the body

Un homme se charge d’entailler le corps

People gather in circle around the naked body, put on the ground

We attend by far but that makes a strange impression

Les gens se rassemblent en cercle autour du corps nu, posé au sol

Nous assistons de loin mais ça laisse une étrange impression

It is necessary hardly 5 minutes so that the vultures end "their work"

Il faut à peine 5 minutes pour que les vautours terminent « leur travail » 

At the end, clothes are burned

A la fin les vêtements sont brûlés

In fact we attended 2 funerals. It was really an exceptional experiment!

Not evident at first sight but very interesting as we had explanations which enlightened us on this custom.

That set all the same in guts …

 En fait nous avons assisté à 2 enterrements. C’était vraiment une expérience exceptionnelle !

Pas évident de prime abord mais très intéressant au fur et à mesure que nous avions des explications qui nous éclairaient sur cette coutume.

Ça prenait quand même aux tripes…

The time here doesn’t seem to count!

We stayed all morning long, there more than 4 hours

Le temps ici ne semble pas compter !

Nous sommes restés là toute la matinée, plus de 4 heures

 

Then we leave all three on the motorcycle …

Puis nous partons, à trois sur la moto…

 

Litang : 2 L’attente de l’enterrement

The funeral’s wait

When we arrive at about 8 am there is nobody. Lou San explains us that the dead man is in the temple with the monks.

Four-five other informed tourists of the event also arrive (3 Americans and 2 Chinese)

Quand nous arrivons vers 8 h il n’y a personne. Lou San nous explique que le mort est au temple avec les moines.

Quatre à cinq autres touristes au courant de l’évènement arrivent aussi (3 américains et 2 chinois)

Then a car and two motorcycles of Tibetans arrive

They stay by away from us; make a fire to warm a big pot of water for the tea.

Puis une voiture et deux motos de tibétains arrivent

Ils se mettent un peu à l’écart. Font un feu pour chauffer une grosse marmite d’eau pour le thé.

Then begin the expectation

Ozlem and I are going to see them to ask them if our presence doesn’t disturb them.

They agree so that we stayed and attended the funeral

It is rather funny because every group observes the other one by far!

Then Tibetans approach us and seem intrigued by hairs in the calves of one of the Americans. The men compare their legs, then the arm, it is rather funny!

Ozlem et moi allons les voir pour leur demander si notre présence ne les dérange pas.

Ils sont d’accord pour que nous restions et assistions à l’enterrement

C’est assez marrant car chaque groupe observe l’autre de loin !

Puis les tibétains s’approchent de nous et semblent intrigués par les poils aux mollets d’un des américains. Les hommes comparent leurs jambes, puis leur bras, c’est plutôt drôle !

Then Tibetans invite us to sit down with them around the fire(light).

We stay there a moment, to warm us, to discuss and to drink some tea

The fact that Ozlem speaks about Chinese facilitates largely the contact. Lou San as Tibetan cannot stay.

Puis les tibétains nous invitent à nous asseoir avec eux autour du feu.

Nous y restons tous un moment, à nous réchauffer, à discuter et boire du thé

Le fait qu’Ozlem parle chinois facilite grandement le contact. Lou San en tant que tibétain n’est pas resté.

This moment of conviviality before the ceremony is very pleasant

été 2010 Litang : 1 Enterrement tibétain

Sky burying

 

We get up very early because we have to meet Lou San to go to attend a sky burying (Tibetan funeral)

 

Nous nous levons très tôt car nous avons rendez-vous avec Lou San pour aller assister à un enterrement tibétain

In the early hours, everything is quiet and deserted

Au petit matin, tout est calme et désert

The funeral takes place in two phases. A 1^st in the temple then the 2^nd in the nature where the body’s dead man is offered to the vultures having been cut (in fact it is to let the blood pass by) then put near a picket, he is then given to birds. His clothes are burned.

 

A place is chosen in the mountain where the dead man’s family, (only the men) will attend the end. Others Tibetan cannot assist it

 

L’enterrement se déroule en deux phases. Une 1^ère au temple puis la 2^nd dans la nature où le corps du mort est offert aux vautours après avoir été découpé (en fait c’est pour laisser le sang s’écouler) puis posé près d’un piquet, il est ensuite donné aux oiseaux. Ses vêtements sont brûlés.

 

Un endroit est choisi dans la montagne où la famille du mort, (uniquement les hommes) assistera à la fin. Les autres tibétains ne peuvent pas y assister
