Dès potron-minet nous prenons un ferry pour quitter Valdez dans la brume ! 

Thursday, August 18^th

At the crack of dawn we take a ferry to leave Valdez in the mist!

Certains finissent leur nuit sur le pont… 

Some finish their night on the deck …

Même moi j'ai fait une petite sieste !

Even me I did a little nap!

Nous accostons à Whittier, minuscule ville d’à peu près 200 habitants.

Il y a un immeuble (moche) qui domine la ville, il est appelé « La cité sous un seul toit » il contient, des appartements, la crèche, des bureaux, des commerces, l’administration etc… Il fait tellement froid l’hiver que ça permet aux habitants de ne pas sortir pendant plusieurs mois !

We accost to Whittier, tiny city of more or less 200 inhabitants

There is an (ugly) building which dominates the city, is called " The city under a single roof " it contains, apartments, the day-nursery, offices, shops, the administration etc. … It is so much cold during winter which that allows the inhabitants not to go out during several months!

Il y a un très long tunnel à une voie (10 minutes pour le traverser) qui est partagé entre les rails du chemin de fer et la route.

There is a very long tunnel in a way (10 minutes to cross it) which is split between the rails of the railroad and the road.

Puis nous arrivons à Seward.

Then we arrive at Seward.

Jeudi 18 août

Cher Seigneur, jusqu'ici aujourd'hui j'ai bien fait. Je n'ai pas potiné, ne me suis pas mis en colère, n’ai pas été avide, grognon, méchant, égoïste ou trop indulgent.

Je suis très reconnaissant de cela; cependant dans quelques minutes, je vais sortir du lit et alors à partir de là, Seigneur, je vais probablement avoir besoin de beaucoup plus d'aide. Amen

Thursday, August 18^th

Dear Lord, so far today I've done okay. I haven't gossiped, lost my temper, been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish or overindulgent.

I'm very thankful for that; however in a few minutes, I'm going to get out of bed and from then on, Lord, I'm probably going to need a lot more help. Amen

Des saumons - Salmons

Mercredi 17 août

A une quinzaine de minutes de Valdez se trouve une « usine » à saumons au bord d’une rivière. Des centaines de saumons remontent la rivière pour aller frayer.

Un barrage a été fait pour les stopper, les empêcher de remonter la rivière, les récupérer et les diriger vers l’usine pour transformation pour la consommation.

Il paraît qu’après le frai les saumons ne sont plus bons à manger. Ils se laissent mourir, une fois leur mission de reproduction accomplie !

Wednesday, August 17^th

In about fifteen of minutes of Valdez is a "factory" to salmons at the edge of a river. Hundreds of salmons go back up the river to go to spawn.

A weir was made to stop them, restrict fish movement upstreams, from catch them and from bringing them towards the factory for transformation for the consumption.

It seems that after the spawn the salmons are not good any more to eat. They let die themselves, once their mission of reproduction is accomplished!

Quel dommage de voir tous ses saumons se décomposer… Ils sont tellement plus beaux dans notre assiette !

Which damage to see all its salmons decomposing … They are so many more beautiful in our plate!

Icebergs en kayak - Iceberg in kayak

Mercredi 17 août

Extraordinaire journée de kayak en mer, au milieu des icebergs, au pied du glacier Columbia ! Grandiose.

Un peu anxieuse le matin, sous la pluie pendant « l’accoutrement » avant l’embarquement sur le bateau, pendant l’explication par Emma du maniement des pagaies et des règles de sécurité par rapport aux icebergs…

Wednesday, August 17^th

Extraordinary day of kayak at sea, in the middle of icebergs, at the foot of Columbia Glacier! Grand.

 

A little bit anxious in the morning, in the rain during "the getup" before the boarding on the boat, during the explanation by Emma of the manipulation of paddles and of safety regulations with regard to icebergs …

Une fois dans le kayak et après 5 minutes de coordination avec Naïma à l’arrière, nous nous sommes débrouillées comme des chefs et c’était splendide !

Once in the kayak and after 5 minutes of coordination with Naïma in the back, we managed as leaders and it was magnificent!

 

On a même eu la chance de voir le glacier Columbia sortir de la brume !

We were even lucky enough to see the Columbia Glacier going out of the mist!

Etre au milieu de toutes ces sculptures de glace était un enchantement à vous faire oublier, la pluie, le froid, le mal aux bras après 2 heures de rame…

To be in the middle of all these sculptures of ice was a delight to lead to forget you, the rain, the cold, the ache arms after 2 hours of paddle …

Pause déjeuner sur l’île aux goélands. Puis c’est reparti pour 2 autres heures de kayak !

Lunch break on the seegulls’ Island. Then it left for 2 other hours of kayak!

 

C’était moins difficile que je pensais pour pagayer… Avec les gants néoprène les mains restent au chaud malgré l’eau très froide.

It was less difficult than I thought to paddle … With gloves neoprene hands stay in the warmth in spite of the very cold water.

Juste un peu compliqué pour faire les photos : lâcher les pagaies, sortir l’appareil photo du sac étanche, faire ses photos pendant que l’autre personne continue à pagayer pour stabiliser le kayak et éviter de dériver. Puis inverser les rôles pour la prise de photos par l’autre personne ! Toute une organisation ! hé hé hé

Just a little complicated to make photos: leave paddles, bring out the camera of the tight bag, make its photos while the other person continues to paddle to stabilize the kayak and avoid drifting. Then to invert the roles for the taking of photos by the other person! A whole organization! Hey hey hey

Une cloque à la main droite… Je n’ai pas l’habitude de ramer !

A blister in the right hand … I am not used to row!

Puis retour en bateau à Valdez avec un passage près d’une petite île en rocher avec un visage de profil…

Then return by boat to Valdez with a passage near a small island in rock with a face of profile …

Valdez environ 4000 habitants, rien à faire d'autre que de manger, dormir et faire une sortie en mer.

Ça tombe bien demain nous y allons, en mer !

Valdez approximately 4000 inhabitants, nothing to do other than, to eat, to sleep and to go out at sea.

That’s good timing, tomorrow we go there, at sea!

Valdez tristement connue pour le grave tremblement de terre et le tsunami de 1964. La ville a été reconstruite à 7 kilomètres du lieu initial.

Valdez sadly known for the grave earthquake and the tsunami of 1964. The city was reconstructed in 7 kilometers of the initial place.

Valdez mondialement connue pour son oléoduc trans-Alaska qui transporte le pétrole.

Valdez world-famous for its oil pipeline trans-Alaska which transports the oil.

Valdez tristement connue pour le naufrage, sur ses côtes en 1989 du Exxon Valdez qui provoqua une marée noire à 40 kilomètres de la ville et détruisit une grande partie de la faune et de la flore.

Valdez sadly known for the wreck, on its coast in 1989 of the Exxon Valdez which provoked an oil spill in 40 kilometers of the city and destroyed a big part of the flora and fauna

Et surtout Valdez impatiemment attendue par le groupe pour enfin allez dormir à l’hôtel, prendre une douche, se réchauffer !

Le luxe...

And especially Valdez impatiently waited by the group for finally go to sleep in the hotel, to take a shower, to warm itself!
