Le glacier depuis une centaine d’années a reculé énormément.

On peut entendre le craquement du glacier, le bruit de glace qui tombe, le bruit d’eau qui coule sous la glace, c’est impressionnant !

We can hear the crackle of the glacier, the noise of ice which falls, the noise of water which flow under the ice, it’s impressive!

Le glacier est sensible au changement climatique. Le glacier Exit a reculé depuis la fin de la petite Période glaciaire. La retraite du glacier, montrée ci-dessous, dit seulement une partie de l'histoire.

Les scientifiques mesurent aussi l'accumulation de neige annuelle et la fonte pour obtenir une meilleure indication "de la santé" du glacier.

Glacier are sensitive to climate change. Exit Glacier has been retreating since the end of the Little Ice Age. The glacier’s retreat, shown above, tells only part of the story.

Scientists also measure annual snow accumulation and melting to get a better indication of the glacier’s « health. »

Camping overdose

Nous sommes à côté du Parc National Kenai

We are next to the Kenai National Park .

Avant dernière nuit de camping… J’en ai vraiment marre de ces campings bas de gamme ; d’autant qu’il y a des motels en ville !

Last but one night of camping … I really fed up with these down-market campings. Especially as there are motels in town!

Les sanitaires pas très propres, les pieds dans la gadoue, l’humi
dité ambiante, même si aujourd’hui il n’a pas plu.

The not very clean toilets, feet in the mud, the ambient humidity, even if today he didn’t rain.

 

Pour prendre une douche (sans trop de confort !) il faut acheter des jetons. 1$ pour 2 minutes… 2 minutes ! Comment c’est possible de prendre une douche en 2 minutes ; même pas le temps de se réchauffer en 2 minutes… 

 

To take a shower (without too much comfort!) it is necessary to buy tokens. $1 for 2 minutes… 2 minutes! How it’s possible to take a shower in 2 minutes; even not the time to warm itself in 2 minutes …

Heureusement on mange bien ! Pierre-Hugues a beaucoup d’imagination pour cuisiner et a du goût, donc c’est bon ! Apéro (vin californien) avec des pinces de crabes, excellent !

Fortunately we eat well! Pierre-Hugues has a lot of imagination to cook and has some taste, thus it is good! Apéritif (Californian wine) with crab's pincers, excellent!

Pendant le repas, surprise ! La table en bois s’écroule sur nos genoux…

Ben encore à quatre pattes, sous la table, pour essayer de réparer. On rigole bien !

During the meal, the surprise! The wooden table collapses on our knees …

Ben still on all fours, under the table to try to fix it. We laugh well!

Finalement on change de table et on continue à se régaler avec

notre saumon de l’Alaska, excellent !

Nous arrivons ici, sans pluie et sous une température plus clémente ! Ça fait du bien !

Ambiance agréable, les gens ici paraissent très sereins et sont très souriants et accueillants.

Nous assistons à l’arrivée des pêcheurs. Ils exposent leurs poissons, avant de les peser et de les découper.

Dès potron-minet nous prenons un ferry pour quitter Valdez dans la brume !

At the crack of dawn we take a ferry to leave Valdez in the mist!

Certains finissent leur nuit sur le pont…

Même moi j'ai fait une petite sieste !

Nous accostons à Whittier, minuscule ville d’à peu près 200 habitants.

Il y a un immeuble (moche) qui domine la ville, il est appelé « La cité sous un seul toit » il contient, des appartements, la crèche, des bureaux, des commerces, l’administration etc… Il fait tellement froid l’hiver que ça permet aux habitants de ne pas sortir pendant plusieurs mois !

We accost to Whittier, tiny city of more or less 200 inhabitants

There is an (ugly) building which dominates the city, is called " The city under a single roof " it contains, apartments, the day-nursery, offices, shops, the administration etc. … It is so much cold during winter which that allows the inhabitants not to go out during several months!

Il y a un très long tunnel à une voie (10 minutes pour le traverser) qui est partagé entre les rails du chemin de fer et la route.

There is a very long tunnel in a way (10 minutes to cross it) which is split between the rails of the railroad and the road.

Puis nous arrivons à Seward.

Then we arrive at Seward.

Jeudi 18 août

Cher Seigneur, jusqu'ici aujourd'hui j'ai bien fait. Je n'ai pas potiné, ne me suis pas mis en colère, n’ai pas été avide, grognon, méchant, égoïste ou trop indulgent.

Je suis très reconnaissant de cela; cependant dans quelques minutes, je vais sortir du lit et alors à partir de là, Seigneur, je vais probablement avoir besoin de beaucoup plus d'aide. Amen

Dear Lord, so far today I've done okay. I haven't gossiped, lost my temper, been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish or overindulgent.

I'm very thankful for that; however in a few minutes, I'm going to get out of bed and from then on, Lord, I'm probably going to need a lot more help. Amen
