Déjeuner en ville

Sympathique déjeuner au bord de l’eau avec Clément, (qui m’a hébergé pendant mes 3 premiers jours à Nouméa).

Nice lunch at the water's edge with Clément, (who accommodated me during my first 3 days to Nouméa).

L’igname

Samuel mon guide de l’île des pins m’a raconté l’igname. Pour les kanaks c’est un aliment sacré, utilisé à chaque évènement important tel que les mariages, baptêmes, décès. C’est un tubercule comestible.

Ils le récoltent entre le 17 et 19 mars pendant la fête de l’igname. Les ignames sont ensuite rassemblées sur la place du village. Une partie est emmenée à l’église pour être bénie puis est offerte au chef de la tribu. Puis toute la récolte est partagée entre tous les membres de la tribu.

 

The yam

Samuel my guide of the island of pines told me the yam. For the Kanaks it’s a sacred food, used in every important event such as the marriages, the baptisms, the deaths. It’s a tuber root vegetable.

 

They harvest it between March 17^th and 19^th during the celebration of the yam. Then yams are gathered on the village square. A part is taken to the church to be blessed then is offered to the chief of the tribe. Then all the harvest is shared between all the members of the tribe.
